As a reminder: Stuttering, Dysarthria, Development expressive language disorder and Phonological awareness problems are difficult to improve only by Montessori methods because of its symptoms and causes.
Activities in Montessori include many opportunities to “speak” and express feelings.
For example, daily activities to foster social skills, such as greetings and conversation, provide good practice for “speaking”. Especially in cultural activities, students are encouraged to express their opinions.
Before I introduce “speaking” exercises at home, let me talk about “communication. Communication is like playing catch, taking turns throwing the ball. In communication, instead of a ball, we take turns throwing words and gestures to each other.
Children with developmental disabilities, especially those on the autism spectrum, tend to have difficulty with this. Practicing “speaking” at home with communication in mind is recommended.
To practice “speaking” at home, we recommend exchanging words while throwing balloons or balls. Alternately saying the syllables (e.g., a, e, i, o, u), saying nouns in categories the child is interested in such as trains or animals, or giving simple riddles. Check which stage of language the child is in, syllables, words, or sentences, and adjust the content.
